Well outside Sonic Boom, but that wasn't the sonic gameplay people had in mind. Increasing number of 2.5D segments and less behind the back segments.

And from unleashed onwards that's basically how "3D" in Sonic has always played out. Sonic Unleashed had 3D sections but they narrowed the level design outside the hubs and even then a large amount of the time you are in 2.5d segments.

The game is busted, though the 360 version is apparently more playable than the PS3 versions which is funny when you think about it. Sonic 2006 was a rushed mess so even if it was the first built from the ground up real open 3D Sonic game it wouldn't really show here. We saw with Shadow the hedgehog how the engine doesn't really work for Single Player at all. Sonic Heroes is likely(imo) the first 3D game in the Sonic franchise made from the ground up and it's made with 3 controllable characters in mind. Everyone's favorite.Pumpkin and find the lost pi. Sonic Adventure 2 tried to focus the level design more but outside of removing a lot of gameplay people didn't like from SA1, it still didn't seem to fix the problems SA1 had, it also removed the exploration aspect and made the stages more linear with the exception of the shard collecting stages. However it's the only time we got anywhere close to a real open 3D Sonic game. It also explains a lot of why Sonic himself controls well but when going through a stage he swerves with no focus, explains several of the glitches, and explains the engines running some of the alternate gameplay styles from fishing, sledding, etc. When you look at the inside of the disc you'll notice that this make sense. Sonic Adventure 1 is basically a combination of multiple tech demo's placed together with sonic models and themes placed over them. Now a lot of people have various opinions on why 3D Sonic games generally don't have great quality (and to be fair this applies to some 2D titles as well but 2D titles just seem to be more consistent) and a lot of the reasons people believe that 3D sonic sucks is because they believe the series can't work in 3D, or that gimmicks got in the way.īut here's something few of you may not have considered, have there really been any real 3D Sonic games in the first place? Thank about it.
